What is Permaculture?
Permaculture is a practical concept applicable from the balcony to the farm, from the city to the wilderness. It enables people to establish productive environments providing food, energy, shelter, material and non-material needs, as well as the social and economic infrastructures that support them. Permaculture means thinking carefully about our environment, our use of resources and how we supply our needs. It aims to create systems that will sustain us not only for the present, but for future generations. Most residents have completed a Permaculture Design Course.
The Land
Gently rolling pastures slope away from a central ridge. Pockets of native bush are protected by covenant and are being regenerated and extended. The sheltered harbour position has unspoiled panoramic views. There is one large lake and many more have been dug for water catchment. The peninsular situation offers good fishing and other water activities. Its wetlands are home to a wide variety of birdlife.
Otamatea Eco-Village:
Will practice permaculture in a spirit of cooperation,
mutual support, respect for one another and the land.
Will preserve and enhance the native ecosystems on the land and surrounding sea.
Will create fertile, holistically integrated agricultural systems and a
village culture that abundantly provides our community’s needs for healthy
living at all levels: physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual.
Will do this sustainably, ethically and with beauty and creative variety.
Will be a positive part of the wider New Zealand society
especially as a model of sustainability and bio-diversity.
Will be part of the wider global cultural evolution
giving and receiving knowledge, wisdom, inspiration, and love.
